Iceland: work tools.
It's time to think about a photographic journey. We have thought about clothes, about the vehicle, but you lack the most important material to get the best photographic results .... what I have to take and why? In the previous post we talked about what we would need to survive temperatures and changing nature of Icelandic weather. |
In this case, we have to do a clear analysis of the type of photo you want to do and what we will find in the country. So we have to think what we need to photograph and to carry extra weight we do not benefit at all, especially hiking. In the field of landscape photography and in a country with difficult weather conditions it is best to emphasize the objectives, but also with creative tools such as filters, or material to maintain the equipment in optimum condition.
We begin with the camera here and there are many options. Today the options are such as analogue or digital, medium format cameras or telemetric ones ... all formats are valid and as long as we carry the equipment well protected, the weather will not mean a problem. The most important things is to travel with a well known camera for being nimble and comfortable shooting, because the nature of this country is to be quick and we need to take advantage of opportunities.
We continue with the indispensable complement to the camera: the lens. Do not worry because we don't need a great amount of lenses to photograph in Iceland. If we do not carry much weight we can take a standard zoom 17-50mm in kind ought enough to photograph the main natural attractions of a short trip. If we photograph landscapes and some birds, seals, whales ... it would be appropriate to take us the combination of a standard zoom with a 70-200mm telephoto zoom type. Needless to say, the more light is the best target for the quality of our pictures, though loaded with more weight.
For the curious, my favorite is the combination of: 18mm prime lenses, 24-70mm, 70-200mm + 1,4x duplicator.
In any case it is important to make an assessment before deciding what to come away, not to carry a great amount of lenses we will obtain the best result. You must sit down, think about what style of photography we do, what we will photograph and the distances between places, if immortalized moving objects or even be static ... then we are doing "passive photography."
There are other important items on a trip to Iceland if we want to focus on landscape photography: filters. We are not talking about protective filters you should all be carried in front of the lenses, we are talking about a whole series of artistic filters that helps us to get creative photographs with a special originality. Traditional filters , or a square or rectangular in a holder. In either type is required to make sure that the system is ready if we use a wide-angle lenses. Otherwise we get a annoying vignetting. Because filters can be combined with each other to achieve various effects depending on the situation that photograph, it is advisable to use a holder with square or rectangular filters. Screw systems are not bad but if we do combinations it could be uncomfortable and slow. Filters come in many types, but we can say that the most used on a trip like Iceland photoworkshop are:
- Neutral density filters; to achieve greater exposure time.
- Polarized filters; to eliminate reflections on shiny surfaces such as water, and / or contrast skies.
- Graduated neutral density filters; to decrease exposure stops, in certain areas of the scene when we have too much contrast.
- Inverse graduated neutral density filters; usually for sunsets, to bring it brightness and power.
Other accessories may be no less important like a timer or remote control for long exposure photographs or "bulb" program, and cleaners for filters and lenses. In areas with waterfalls that is easy to dirty our lenses with water drops.
These two accessories are must add at least a couple of batteries, and charger. As consumible and if you work with digital equipment, you obviously lack a good set of memory cards. Consider that with any problem with this type of photographic material will be difficult to find spare parts out of photo shops in the capital, which are very good. (Http://www.beco.is)
Especially make it a space in the suitcase and do not let the tripod plate! In fact ... I'm speaking of the tripod. That object it is badly to load but if you leave it, you will be miss during the whole trip. Essential in most photographs will at long exposure, especially during the night when we are hunting aurora borealis. Although there are very expensive ones and made of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber, the main skill is to have fast extraction system and be stable enough to withstand the maximum weight that can reach.
Once we decided photographic equipment we need to, gladly, it's time to prepare the road!
Until next and final entry!
