Iceland: What I take?
In recent years the number of people traveling in Iceland has increased considerably, either by volcanoes eruptions with consequences throughout Europe and as an example in the management of the economic crisis. However, we have finished placing it in the map. Anyway, it is a growing touristic destination and reaffirmed as a photographic paradise. |
Make a trip to a place with a changing climate so far implies that we have to prepare more careful what we will take. The following lines has been written depending on the situations which photographer can be found during his trip, keeping in mind the topography and meteorology.
I start here: the weather. The country is just below the line that marks the Arctic Circle, and this, as we owe imagine, means that the climate is not exactly benign. During summer time the thermometers rarely climb above 20 degrees and can reach 5 degrees down from the mountainous areas where the night cools. In the winter we have to prepare warm clothes to withstand cold temperatures. One night in February or March we can see how the thermometer drops to negative 15 degrees while trying to hunt aurora borealis. However, whatever time we choose to visit this wonderful country, we will always be adorned with layers to adapt to the changing nature of weather in these latitudes. In winter, a good shirt (or several) heat is necessary, recommended in summer, and thermo sweaters or similar. In winter we should not forget a jacket with natural or synthetic fibers such as "Primaloft".
Each year we meet a strong wind in all parts of the country. Sometimes, it is the wind that makes the temperatures down. Do not forget your jacket third layer, windproof and waterproof, as part of isolate ourselves from the wind, also have to cover ourselves from possible rain, snow, or water that vaporized from powerful waterfalls.
Iceland has lots of terrains: sand, stone, turf and water, lots of water. In a country where most populated areas are concentrated in and around the capital, we can say rarely tread asphalt or cement. Footwear need to be good! without realizing it at the end of the day we walked variety of land to extract the best. Doing it the right shoes will improve results and desire to make more good the next day. I recommend lightweight boots with Gore-Tex or similar, medium or low. The heels only recommended for a long night in Reykjavík.
Consider that if you go there with not to much technical clothes there will cost to find it if you are not near the capital, and in any case, if you find it ,you will pay a very expensive price. In the suitcase there is to be free space to put a warm gloves, a "buff" and if you go in winter, also space for a cap.
There is more material recommended for those extreme photographers . For example you could take waterproof trousers for those rainy long terms, with the wind blowing, that it may end up making us go quickly to the car. At other times we can find in swampy areas or even close to the sea with waves strong enough to get wet legs. A fisherman pants type could help us overcome this obstacle as we take pictures with tripod.
And especially do not let your swimsuit and towel! Iceland is full of hot-spots, natural and free, private or paid as Blue Lagoon. Because of spectacular scenery, will not stop taking photos but also have time to relax and inspire us.
See you in the next post!
